Equine Training Excellence at Clover Hill Equestrian
At Clover Hill Equestrian, breaking young horses transcends mere profession – it’s a passion. Witnessing the transformation from a raw, untrained horse to one that comprehends and relishes its responsibilities is the pinnacle of our dedication.
Our expertise extends to breaking various types of horses, ranging from athletic sport horses and happy hackers to high-energy thoroughbred racehorses.
Duration of Training
The timeline for breaking horses is variable, contingent on the horse’s prior handling and the desired training level. Generally, a period of 6 to 8 weeks suffices for a horse to adeptly ride and navigate a small course of fences. However, even after this period, the horse remains categorized as “green,” usually not recommended for novice or beginner riders. If further refinement and experience are necessary, we extend the training duration to nurture the horse to an advanced stage after a well-deserved break.
TRAINING PROCESS
Ensuring the health and well-being of your horse is paramount at Clover Hill Equestrian
We initiate the training with a thorough dental check, addressing sharp teeth and removing wolf teeth. Throughout the initial weeks, the focus lies on the gradual acclimation and training of the horse.
In the first week, the process begins with introductions, encompassing, lunging exercises, and the potential integration of the roller and side reins. Progression involves further development, such as driving and lunging using long reins, the introduction of the saddle, and potentially commencing loose schooling sessions over small obstacles.
Then continued advancement with activities like driving and lunging in long reins, the introduction to, quiet country lane drives, and preliminary riding within the stable premises. At the same time, loose schooling adapts according to individual readiness. As the program extends, the horse transitions to being ridden off in the lunge pen, with an introduction to arena work focusing on rideability, trotting poles, and the application of front shoes by the farrier to prevent sore feet.
We then see an expansion into diverse terrains, such as quiet country lanes and farm areas, integrating activities like crossing poles and acquainting the horse with various obstacles, often met with enthusiastic responses from the horses. Soon after, the horse, now confident, may be introduced to the cross-country course, exposing it to new environments for a broader experiential base. Riding alone and in groups becomes routine, aiding in the horse’s adaptability and overall training progress.
Horses vary in their response, and our goal is to facilitate a smooth process, providing regular progress updates through WhatsApp videos and images of the horses/pony’s progression.
When breaking our own horses, a strategic break of 5 to 6 weeks on pasture allows them to assimilate the training. Witnessing the remarkable transformation upon their return to work is truly gratifying.
Choose Clover Hill Equestrian for a meticulous breaking process that ensures both the horse and owner experience a seamless journey to equine excellence.
